Halloween is a holiday filled with frightful fun, but what could be scarier than your chiropractor telling you to keep your Halloween healthy? Dressing up in crazy costumes and getting candy is a tradition that many look back on fondly, but it’s also important to maintain balance. Holidays centered on sugary sweets can make that a challenge.
If you have a family of your own, you probably work hard to instill healthy habits and balance in day-to-day life. You don’t want that hard work undone and while that won’t happen with just one night, keep in mind just how much candy your kids can consume! A study by the School of Public Health at the University of Alabama found the average child will collect between 3,500 and 7,000 calories worth of candy on Halloween. Now that really is scary! We’re aren’t telling you to cancel all candy, but we do have a few tricks to help your family have a healthier Halloween.
Start with a Meal So Good, It’s Scary!
You kids might be ready to hit the trick-or-treating trail as quickly as possible, but it’s important for them to start the night with a healthy meal. Before you take the family out for a night of fun and fright, start with a well-balanced meal. This will make it easier for the entire family to resist filling up on candy. Include fiber, lean protein, and complex carbs so everyone will have plenty of energy while trick-or-treating.
Set Ghoulishly Goals
One healthy aspect of trick-or-treating is all that walking is pretty good exercise. To get your kids even more excited for your ground-covering goals, create a map. Have a goal in mind for how far you plan to walk, then map out the route. You can always add on extra neighborhoods as you go or download an app to track your progress.
Don’t Fear the Freezer
Talk to your kids prior to bringing home the big candy haul and determine how much they can have on Halloween night, then take the rest away and freeze it. Fun-size candy bars may be small, but they take longer to eat when they are frozen. This can help prevent your kids from consuming too much candy when Halloween is over.
You may not realize it, but chiropractic care can benefit your overall health and wellness in many ways. This is especially important with the holidays coming up, which often makes it more challenging to live a balanced lifestyle.
